Hepworth
Showing the progression of The Hepworth Wakefield
The Hepworth Wakefield is a major new art gallery on the waterfront at Wakefield
.Designed by award winning British architect David Chipperfield, The Hepworth will unveil a previously unseen collection of sculptures by its namesake, Barbara Hepworth one of the most important artists of the 20th Century, who was born and raised in Wakefield.
Thursday the nineteenth of May was my last visit before the Hepworth Wakefield opened its doors for all to visit and marvel at Wakefield’s new long awaited art gallery.
Lasting from 2005 to 2011, my task was to record the construction of The Hepworth Wakefield from beginning to end - a dream of a project which has filled my photographic passion like never before. It has been a privilege to be part of it and I never had any doubts that it would be a success.
I have made so many friends along the way and over the years have watched many people come and go, and feel proud to be probably one of a handful of people to be there at the beginning and end of the building of this landmark gallery.
I hear so many people who initially doubted the idea of building such a gallery in Wakefield, and who now cannot sing its praises any higher. It is no surprised to me of the impact that it has on them when visiting this beautiful gallery for the first time.
I visit often to walk around without my camera and feel proud to have been a part of it. I look forward to the ever-changing exhibitions, which it will be putting on, from the Tate and other international artists. In addition, I look forward to taking part in the workshops they will be putting on for us all.
This is an inspiring place for the schoolchildren of the Wakefield district. The Wakefield born sculptor Barbara Hepworth will hopefully be an inspiration to them all, along with Henry Moor the Castleford born Sculptor who also has works in the gallery.
I hope you enjoy the images of the building of The Hepworth Wakefield as much as I have enjoyed taking them.
